River, Lake Rejuvenation

River, Lake Rejuvenation: New Process

Diagnosis of the Problem

Most of our rivers are highly polluted as well as our lakes, ponds and other water bodies. The recent CAG Report of 2009 and 2010 says that the rivers are severely polluted .A CAG report on Bangalore says that- 100 million liters of untreated sewage is let into the rivers, lakes and this river water in turn is used by farmers in downstream for growing crops and we eat such food grown by polluted water. CAG report blames BWSSB to take moral responsibility of handling sewage and to treat them before letting into river, lakes etc. But sewage treatment is costly, sewage is spread out. So should we allow or rivers , lakes and other water bodies to be polluted??

Objective- Polluted water is a serious health hazard and it is desirable to clean up rivers, lakes and all water bodies from the water borne organic wastes generated from the pollutants and sewage so that waste is converted to wealth by producing more fish and thus increasing the per capita income of fishermen

Our Solution: In water, growing algae has the capacity to consume nutrients and absorb CO2 and release oxygen by photosynthesis. Diatoms are one of the species which contribute to about 50% of world’s food produced in oceans. An organic solution that can grow diatom algae in any water – saline, fresh water, polluted water, sewage water etc is used to clean and reuse the waste water. The growth of diatoms is very fast and happens within 5 minutes and continues till the nutrients lasts. The growing diatoms absorb CO2 and release O2 at micro plant level. The O2 helps aerobic bacteria breakdown organics into its constituents and thus cleans up the waste water. The suspended solids break down into nutrients, gases and sludge. The nutrients are further absorbed by the diatoms to grow. The diatom algae produce food by photosynthesis and this becomes food for zooplankton. Zooplankton in turn becomes the food for the fishes. Therefore, by making use of this natural process, to clean up any water bodies such as river, lakes. If there are no fish the zooplankton become part of sludge and become excellent manure for plants. There is no bad smell in water and in sludge. The dissolved oxygen content of treated water improves considerably.

What is your innovation?

This is a patented idea. It helps growth of diatom algae in any water – saline, fresh water, polluted water, sewage water etc & is used to clean and reuse the waste water. The growth of diatoms is very fast and happens within 5 minutes & continues till the nutrients lasts. Growing diatoms absorb CO2 & release O2 at micro plant level. The O2 helps aerobic bacteria breakdown organics into its constituents and thus cleans up the waste water. Suspended solids break down into nutrients, gases & sludge

Who gains the most?

Provides employment to large number of economically weaker sections or unskilled labourers in rural with better and hygienic working conditions. This helps various lake users such as fishermen, dhobi, cattle owners, and farmers to earn their livelihood. Benefits offered by this technology-Not dependent upon electricity, Minimal maintenance and Minimal moving parts, zero sludge, absolutely eco friendly, No foul odor. Will help to Govt- Urban local bodies, Water supply &sewerage boards, Gram Panchayat, Sewage Treatment Plant, farmers who get clean water from rivers, lake

Who pays?

The Government- Urban local bodies, Water supply &sewerage boards, Gram Panchayat have agreed to implement this new innovative solution for restoration of water bodies. They will make the investment as we have already demonstrated the technology and cost effectiveness. It saves them more than 75% of the costs and thus Government is willing to take this project on large scale.

What is your success?

We already have a working model for all waste treatment .Implemented on pilot basic in STP, a small lake, open nalla in Vrishibhavati valley in Bangalore. We have certified and tested documents of the water samples for Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. We have identified several more lake and entire nalla of 3-4 Km for rejuvenate. Pilot Project in lake/river valley • Total flow – 60 cum per day • Inlet BOD – 210 mg/l; • Outlet BOD – 17 mg/l • Colour – Clear • Odour – No odour

Implementation plan

Up scaling the Implementation of this Model in more lakes in villages and small city and Clean up water bodies- rivers and so on

Who this will help

Every one generates liquid waste. This will help treat this waste in environmentally friendly way and help everyone rise to environment consciousness.

This will help the Urban Local Bodies and Gram Panchayat to set up decentralised sewage and solid waste treatment plant and help reduce their cost and effort.

This will help the Private sewage treatment plant owners to adopt this and help them save cost.
